Speaking of animals eating other animals, I've just had a report of an eagle
preying on domestic ducks in the Keji area. Most likely those
food-supplemented "valley eagles". The duck was still alive when it was
found, but its back was eaten. The eagle has been returning periodically
and that has the duck owner upset. Of course it is the way of nature. (I
think they're building a new duck pen now.)

I suppose cod must have eaten all sorts of smaller birds back in the day
when we had huge cod fish in our seas? How interesting to take a little
dovekie.

A friend of mine who worked in a fish plant many years ago saw a large bulge
in the belly of one codfish. Upon investigation it turned out that the
codfish had eaten a dovekie. This is the first occurence that I've heard of
this.

Hi Donna and All

This story reminds me of years ago when the

ice fishing for pickerel first started. A friend wanted

to try it so we planned to go one cold morning.

Before we left I checked my mouse trap in the basement

and had caught a mouse. So I put it in a plastic bag and put

it in my pocket. and forgot it was there.

While we were fishing a fellow came around doing a survey of

what we were using for bait. I remembered the mouse and quickly

put it on my hook and down the hole.

He came to me and asked what I was using. A mouse I said - A what?

he answered I said Une souris! - I understand English he said and when

I showed him the wet mouse on the hook I though he would barf!

I'll not eat any fish from this lake he said as he stomped off!

Have an enjoyable week!

Paul

My mother's gray jays are still coming to the yard regularly for food. They
are believed to be nesting nearby.

On Friday, the cat caught a mouse, possibly its first one (it's a young
cat). It dropped it near the door before it entered the house. A short
while later, my mother saw a gray jay flying toward the woods with a large
piece of cargo on board (in its beak). She looked out to see most of the
mouse was gone. The cat hadn't eaten any of it, so I guess the gray jays
ate well that day.
