This sounds like what I've read can happen in a territorial dispute on the =
basis of studies done through Audubon.

The song sparrows that frequent our feeders seem to always be in conflict. =
I=92ve never seen the behavior you describe, but they certainly dispute th=
e right to be at the feeder. Even when there are several perches available=
, the one feeding will chase the later arriver away. Even on the ground,=
they have to keep a certain distance from one another. Other species of y=
ard birds seem to be less aggressive.
They sing so sweetly, we would like to think they have kindly temperaments =
to match. HA! Anthropomorphizing, even when we know better...

Something I haven't seeen before. Two Song Sparrows flew at each other in =
my backyard, locked together and fell to the ground, still locked together.=
They rolled around a bit flapping their wings and finally separated. The=
n they repeated the same thing a couple of times. Must have been two males=
 trying to impress a female.
