At 4:30 am I was awake and what felt like 100 feet away, a coyote started to howl. He/she did it about eight times and it was very loud. I figured it must be mating season and this one was calling to let another coyote know he or she was in town and available. I was shocked by the howling because I live near a green belt near the 102 highway up at the top of Clayton Park.  I know there are lots of animals up here but still to hear the howling, I have to say that was a surprise.
