The introduced roses may be providing much needed structural..antierosion + wind break + habitat layering..and food resources. We wrote a paper on Brier's rose..The Rugosa Rose of China. .and started thinking bad bad bad then found it fed squirrels, mice gulls and coyotes and that the bayberry we planted under its bushes and away from them actually survived better under roses. Much of the shorelines of fishing and agricultural communities was cleared back 100 m or more from shore in the early 20th to the 1960s. The fields became run out. The natives are slow to recolonize zones that originally would be white and black spruce. But multiflora and rugosa are good colonizers and close the nutrient cycles, reduce erosion and making habitat and wildlife food. Naturalists may have observed this. I was surprised seeing a squirrel eating the outer fruit of rugosa rose and then seeing mice had cracked the seeds themselves for the meal inside. But the capper...no pun..is the wine and the delicious rose hip jelly village economy of rugosa on Brier.
