In reply to Michael's inquiry, being a member of the BNS calendar =
committee, I offer the following, taken in part from the second inside =
cover page of the BNS 2017 and 2016 calendars, under the "Natural =
History Calendar" note:

This was a new feature added in the 2016 edition*. English translations =
of Mi=92kmaw names for the Full Moons occurring during the year, appear =
in the respective date rectangles. The names are courtesy of David =
Chapman of The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and Cathy LeBlanc, =
a member of the Mi=92kmaq First Nation. Chapman and LeBlanc mention =
that there are many variations in the English translations of the =
Mi=92kmaw names, but, what is important is to capture a significant =
ecological activity occurring during the time of that moon.

*Mi=92kmaw Moons (a new feature for 2016): The English version of the =
Mi=92kmaw name=20
for each full Moon of the year has been provided.

I would suggest that the interesting story Paul gave in his reply, is an =
excellent example supporting why the Tom Cod Moon idea came into being =
for January.
=20
Sincerely,
  Sherman Williams
