Anne Hughes and I did a bit of birding today. The female gadwall that I fo=
und originally on Dec. 21 was still at the same location at the house if co=
ming from Lunenburg towards Mahone Bay just before you turn off to Second P=
eninsula. It was still with 98 mallards, but apart by itself on the lawn. =
The odd mallard that I photographed in Back Harbour on Dec. 21 was with th=
is group. At the time of my posting a picture of it I said that it was a d=
omesticated escapee. I'm not so sure now. I now think it is a regular mal=
lard with leucistic characteristics. The Barrow's goldeneye found by Kevin=
Lantz the other day was with the ducks at Back Harbour Lunenburg. There w=
ere a ton of greater scaup there with at least five female lesser scaup. A=
load of common goldeneyes, some hooded mergansers, common mergansers, red-=
breasted mergansers, bufflehead, mallards and black ducks. Let's just say =
a ton of ducks. The American kestrel was by the Lighthouse Motel along the=
Corkum's Island road that runs from First South to Mason's Beach. Not the =
actual Corkum's Island road that goes out to the island.

Sincerely,

James R. Hirtle
