Haven=E2=80=99t seen one before nor since, but have explore= d less in recent years. From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] = On Behalf Of Randy Lauff Sent: September 28, 2016 4:28 PM To: NatureNS Subject: [NatureNS] uncommon waterscorpion All, On Monday, I had the pleasure, for the first time in about five years, to j= oin my colleague, Russell Wyeth, on his entomology field trip with the stud= ents of his invertebrate zoology class. The focus, because of the weather, = was largely on the aquatic insects. We went to two sites, a brook and a pon= d, sites which I have sampled extensively with my own students. While helping a trio of students at the pond, one of them pointed to a subm= erged log and said, "What is THAT?" I looked, I shuddered, I asked for (ok,= demanded) a net, and caught the waterscorpion Nepa apiculata. We do have a= much more common waterscorpion here, <http://bugguide.net/node/view/14962= > Ranatra fusca, the Brown Waterscorpion but it's no issue at all to tell t= he two apart. See http://people.stfx.ca/rlauff/personel/recent.html for a p= icture of the one I caught. Nepa is rather uncommon here, I know of specimens at DNR and the NSMNH, per= haps five total. And given that I've been doing a lot of aquatic insect sam= pling recently, including at Monday's pond, this was a very nice find. My t= hanks to Hannah Stevens, the student who spotted the insect.
