As I recall, one Lester Allen, an avid shell-col= lector introduced them. I don=E2=80=99t know where he got the live materia= l, and it is too late to ask him. I do recall that the snails were identified by Lester and his sister Letha = (whose shell collection is now in the NS Museum) as Viviparus malleatus. -----Original Message----- From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] = On Behalf Of Fred Schueler Sent: September 6, 2016 1:31 PM To: NATURENB@LISTSERV.UNB.CA; naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: [NatureNS] Occurrence of the Chinese Mystery Snail in Atlantic Can= ada Naturalists, The publication on this is now available on line - and any of the provincia= l museums would be glad of specimens or photos documenting that it is "is c= learly more widespread in the region." http://karstaddailypaintings.blogspot.ca/2014/08/grand-lake-mystery-snails-= watercolour-4.html gives an account of the St John River discovery and our experience with the= species in Ontario, and http://karstaddailypaintings.blogspot.ca/2011/08/c= hinese-mystery-snail-habitat-oil-on.html an account of the ones near home. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Abstract: The Chinese mystery snail, Cipangopaludina [=3DBellamya] chinensi= s, is documented for the first time in the Saint John River, New Brunswick,= a watercourse which drains the largest watershed in Atlantic Canada. This = is the first non-native mollusc known to be established in the Saint John R= iver system. Although significant ecosystem effects of the species seem unl= ikely, possible introduction of C. chinensis via boat traffic emphasizes th= e need for boater education combined with monitoring of the Saint John Rive= r system for potentially more troublesome non-native species, including the= zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha. Review of published records and museum= collections for Atlantic Canada show C. chinensis has been reported from 1= 3 freshwater wetlands and waterbodies in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and New= foundland since 1955. The species remains extant in at least 10 of these si= tes and is clearly more widespread in the region than the single previously= published report would suggest. McAlpine, Donald F., Dwayne A. W.
