Hi Carmel and all,

Common Yellowthroat is an interesting example. You will see that it is =
not on my list for this week. I should be picking them up overhead =
somewhat regularly by the end of August, a peak in mid-September, and =
stragglers continuing to mid-October. Some of the early migrating =
warblers like American Redstart do have a long journey but so does one =
of our latest migrating warblers, the Blackpoll Warbler. Each warbler =
species seems to have a specific migration strategy.

Thanks so much for your interest!

John,=20

I am a bit amazed at the numbers of departing warblers already. =
Interesting in that I have a nest here on the property with just-hatched =
Common Yellowthroat!=20

=20

Are the early departures those who have the longest voyage? i.e. their =
wintering grounds are the farthest from here? Lots of questions, I am =
sure more answers will be available as we are more able to monitor =
migration through various means. What you are doing is a nice lens on =
the situation, I always find it fascinating! Keep up the good work.

Hi All,

The rate of nocturnal movements of warblers at Carleton, Yarmouth =
County, almost doubled over the previous week. There was a total of 240 =
calls and at least 181 individual birds at a rate of 34 calls per night. =
Warblers composed 99% of the calls recorded. Despite a continuing =
variety in species composition, early migrating warbler species =
dominated the count. The most common species were American Redstart (69 =
calls), Black-and-White Warbler (45 calls), and Yellow Warbler (34 =
calls). The numbers of these three species seemed to indicate true, =
south-bound migration, rather than post-breeding dispersion. A summary =
list can be found below.

The weather radars in the state of Maine, at Caribou and Portland, =
showed only light activity but with evidence of bird migration on most =
nights when there was no rain. This, and previous reports, are posted =
at: http://www.johnfkearney.com/Carleton_YarmouthCounty_2016.html.=20
