The number of 1.17 bird = per turbine per year in Atlantic Canada is based on the study of 5 wind = farms. A study conducted by the Canadian Wildlife Service and published = in 2013 estimated 11.2 birds per turbine at 6 wind farms in Nova Scotia, = 15.2 at 2 wind farms in PEI, and 2.4 at 2 wind farms in NB.=20 The most recent study is based on an analysis of 18% of all turbines = installed in Atlantic Canada. Only one wind farm with 7 turbines was = analyzed in Nova Scotia. As an independent consultant, I have conducted = 5, two-year bird and bat mortality studies for wind energy companies at = wind farms in Nova Scotia. Not one of these five studies was included in = this report. Thus it appears that wind energy companies are not = compelled to report their findings to the people who are responsible for = the database upon which these studies are made. Furthermore, only the wind industry and a core group of government = officials have access to the database. So there is no way to = independently verify these analyses. John =20 =20 From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca = [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Don MacNeill Sent: July-29-16 12:35 To: NaturenNS <naturens@chebucto.ns.ca> Subject: [NatureNS] Bird and Bat Mortality From Wind Turbines =20 Here is the URL for the Wind Energy Bird and Bat Monitoring Database http://www.bsc-eoc.org/resources/wind/Jul2016_Wind_database_summary.pdf If I am reading this correctly, the average passerine death per turbine = is between 1 and 3 per year in Atlantic Canada. My impression was that = the numbers were much higher than that.
