   If the bird nested on the ground in open land, such as a pasture, I would suspect a Savannah Sparrow.&#160; I think most of the other common sparrows, e.g. Song and White-throated,&#160; and Junco, would prefer nesting on the ground under the cover of shrubs, or low in the shrubs themselves.

       </div> I came across a nest with four tiny eggs, (in a hoofprint made last summer by my horse when he was in that pasture!). I very carefully checked it a few days later to find miniscule naked chicks. They are so vulnerable, it&#39;s amazing that they aren&#39;t all taken by predators.
