While walking our springer spaniel in our woods on Wolfville Ridge this morning, listening to migrant Ovenbirds announcing their overnight arrival, I was startled to have one of Bernard Forsythe's Barred Owls suddenly fly out of the wooded area right beside me, carrying a large Snowshoe Hare in its claws, which almost looked too heavy for the owl to carry. The owl hastily fled the scene with its bountiful prize. I think we had disturbed it on the ground nearby, maybe shortly after it caught the hare. As Bernard said, this owl has three young mouths to feed besides the female, so this wild rabbit will greatly help. I think this is a 'first' for me. Checked out my Blk-cap. Chickadee nesting box this afternoon. Female flushed; there were seven little eggs speckled with pinky-purple markings. According to my records this is about 2-3 weeks ahead of last year's effort.
