This afternoon, I came across a male wood duck, paddling in the outflow of Frog Pond, Dingle Park, Halifax. It was in the company of a female black duck, and followed that female when it approached me checking for a (non-existent) piece of food. (Black ducks at Frog Pond are used to be fed.) Both the black duck and the wood duck were less than a meter from me before turning back. Then, another (male?) black duck approached the two, and was chased away by the wood duck. Whenever I saw a wood duck before, it kept a good distance. Would keeping the distance be typical, and approaching the human be atypical? Or are there wood ducks that are used to humans? Also, how frequent is such cross-species courting?
