It must have been nice to hear the Phoebe. It=E2=80=99s not going to =
like the weather that=E2=80=99s coming this week, but as long as it can =
hang on until Thursday, all will be well.

=20

I like your observations of Starlings trying to squeeze through the nest =
hole. I stare at a power pole near our front yard each year where =
Starlings always nest in a hole high up, and raise more than one =
family. I=E2=80=99ve envisioned a number of ways to try and dissuade =
them, none of them really safe, and some perhaps not even legal. It =
sure would be nice to save the cavity for eastern blue birds or tree =
swallows instead of these guys. Ideas welcome. I see Lee Valley has =
proper metal rings of appropriate size to keep out starlings. But I =
stop short of climbing a power pole to put one in place. (I=E2=80=99ve =
spoken to a young neighbour who works for NSPI about climbing the pole =
for me. He probably thinks I am nuts.) We=E2=80=99ll keep putting up =
tree swallow nest boxes with the appropriate sized openings. =20

=20

I=E2=80=99ve got a Flicker that has just started banging away on the =
Selkirk chimney yesterday. Downy and Hairy are still coming regularly =
for suet, and the Downy has also been busy sounding his territory. =
Spring is wonderful.

Saw and listened to my FOY Phoebe at the top of an alder near the corner =
of Brooklyn St and Shaw Rd

=20

Also I watched with delight as a pair of Starlings attempted to enter my =
two Tree Swallow nest boxes but could not squeeze more than half way in. =
Yesssss!
