I am wondering if other folks out there may want to check for migrating
salamanders tonight. I'm not an expert but perhaps start checking the
perimeter of ponds and then working our way back to forests might be a good
tactic. Someone else may have a better idea.
Last night, my husband discovered a large yellow-spotted salamander outside
the garage, clearly on his/her way to the local pond last night. He/she
froze as the sudden light of the opened garage door very likely shocked it
to a halt, or perhaps it was the vibrations of footsteps. As they are known
to move to ponds in a rather synchronous episode on the first night above 5
degrees Celsius and preferably moist and rainy, the event may have been
completed last night. However, tonight's weather fits the criteria, too (at
least in the valley), so I am going to do a little checking tonight. I am
wondering if anyone else will be checking this out, too.
Of course if they've already reached their destinations, a careful
flashlight verification of pond bottoms might reveal them. Also, if they
are moving tonight, we might consider trying to help them across roads
before they get squished.
(I've already expressed my disappointment for not having been told of last
night's salamander encounter until this AM! To miss an annual event!)
I suppose they'll be fine with this abrupt cold flash that is going to slam
us in the coming days. Nasty.
