We started= getting excited about it when a few people (Maxine Quinton and Lou Bertala= n) commented on the North American Gulls Facebook Page that they thought it= looked good for Kamchatka Gull (Larus canus kamtschatschensis). Ronnie d'E= ntremont and I saw the gull on March 13 and were able to see it in a group = of Ring-billed Gulls with our naked eye from a good distance away. This was= because the mantle is much darker than the Ring-billed Gulls (a feature sh= own by Kamchatka Gull kamtschatschensis). Here are the photos that I took o= n March 13: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=3DS28144384 Ian McLaren's All the Birds of Nova Scotia (2012) states that kamtschatsche= nsis had not been confirmed in eastern North America (it is occastional in = Alaska). Since Ian's book=2C there have been several sightings of Mew Gulls= that are apparently of the kamtschatschensis population. There was a nearb= y discovery of one in Newfoundland by Alvan Buckley on Sep 16=2C 2014. See = the links below for more sightings in the east including the one from The R= ock. Sep 2014 in Newfoudlandhttp://alvanbuckley.blogspot.ca/2014/09/that-mewcomm= on-gull-thing.htmlhttp://birdingfrontiers.com/2014/09/20/kamchatka-gull-at-= st-johns-newfoundland/ March 2015 in Massachussettshttp://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=3DS= 22347612 April 2015 in Connecticuthttp://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=3DS228= 92065http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=3DS22925974http://www.shor= ebirder.com/2015/04/apr-15-mew-gull-in-west-havenmilford-ct.html I'll be writing a blog post about the gull and will include a more comprehe= nsive list of sightings of kamtschatschensis in eastern North America (if t= here are more). The Meteghan Mew Gull looks much different than the expected canus that we = get in small numbers each winter. It has a large bill=2C sloping forehead= =2C dark mantle among other features that distinguish it from canus=2C and = the other Mew Gull subspecies. I e-mailed some photos to Peter Adriaens and= Chris Gibbins who recently filled a special issue of Dutch Birding with th= eir paper entitled Identification of the Larus canus complex: Adriaens=2C P. & C. Gibbins. 2016. Identification of the Larus canus comple= x. Dutch Birding 38:1-64. Peter and Chris=2C who were looking at the photos together=2C replied with = "the size and jizz=2C and the upper parts=2C are obviously good and everyth= ing we can see in the primary pattern looks good too". They go on to say th= at the primary pattern would be extremely rare in canus. They did mention t= hat photos of the underside of the primaries would be beneficial.=20 You will see a blog post about this gull soon and likely a lenghty note abo= ut it in the winter or spring issue of NS Birds. --- =20 Alix Arthur d'Entremont BSc Geomatics Engineering 292 Abbott's Harbour RoadMiddle West PubnicoYarmouth Co.=2C Nova ScotiaCana= da B0W 2M0 Phone: +1 902 762 2082Mobile: +1 902 307 0373 =0A= e-mail: alixdentremont@hotmail.com =0A= Bird Photography http://www.flickr.com/photos/alixd/Website http://alixdent= remont.blogspot.ca/ = --_0205e6c5-5cb9-49ee-9857-b04c82959b7b_ Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html> <head> <style><!-- .hmmessage P { margin:0px=3B padding:0px } body.hmmessage { font-size: 12pt=3B font-family:Calibri } --></style></head> <body class=3D'hmmessage'><div dir=3D'ltr'>I feel that it is time to share = the recent news about the likely subspecific identification of the Mew Gull= that has been at Meteghan Wharf=2C Digby County=2C since Feb 27 (originall= y found by Clarence Stevens Jr).
