There's a line of youngish spruce trees about 30 feet to the north of our
house on Wyman Road. About 11 A.M., my gaze fell on a dark,
jay-to-flicker-sized bird shape on the ground on the sunlit (yup!) snow in
front of the trees. The bird turned its head and showed a very long bill.
Then it flipped under the spruces, never to be seen again.

Didn't have much tail.

Can't think of anything else it could have been, other than a woodcock.
