Agreed=2C John. =20

When we write the Minister to thank her for the decision=2C we should urge =
that the government reaffirm its commitment to consider allowing developmen=
ts or activities in National Parks only if they are to help protect or inte=
rpret natural ecosystems and landscapes or provide related services to visi=
tors that can not be provided as well or better in adjacent areas outside t=
he National Parks.
=20
It was the decision by senior bureaucrats (perhaps with political pressure)=
to accept this proposal in principle that shook the confidence of Canadian=
s who care about the special role of National Parks. This statue was no m=
ore relevant to the protection of National Parks than would be the establis=
hment of a Disneyland-style park there=2C and unless the policy is re-estab=
lished=2C this sort of proposal will continue to be a threat. The argument=
s used=2C that it would attract more tourists and diversify the visitor exp=
erience would still be there and attract the support of a portion of the lo=
cal populace who see only the short-term economic value of NPs as a tourist=
 attraction.

That is what needs to be said=2C and what troubles me is that this has not =
been invoked as a reason for stepping back from the project. If someone in =
authority doesn=92t explicitly point out the conflict with the mandate=2C i=
