Dear All, Feb 5, 2016
A short National Geographic article (June 1979) about Diatoms reminded
me of the astonishing number of ways to make a pill box; about 25,000
species !
In addition to many variations in bilateral symmetry (Pennales) those
with radial symmetry (Centrales) represented in the article variously have
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14 and perhaps 25 points.
Some divide every 4 to 8 hours growing from one to a billion in 10 days.
Some have been dried on paper for 150 years and revived on being wet tough.

Using a laminar flow system, a mix of Diatoms, sunlight and artificial
light at night, using batteries charged by sunlight, it should be possible,
with toxin-free sewage and silica for nutrients, to develop a process to fix
CO2 released by combustion at power plants; CO2 trapped in a solution of
Ca(OH)2 and recycled when spent as Ca(OH)2.
