This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0175_01D15D16.F3E96D00 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Jim Wolford=20 To: naturens=20 Sent: Monday, February 01, 2016 4:12 PM Subject: [NatureNS] B. orioles, shrew tracks & carcasses, towhee, = pileated woodpecker, n. harrier Hi Jim, Feb 1, 2016 Collins (1959), who has a way condensing much into one line, says = this about Shrews: "They are voracious feeders and many apparently eat = their own weight in food every 24 hours just to sustain life." and "Most = specimens of shrews are found dead in the woods..." From the above it seems likely that the shrews found by Sam were = in search of food and did not find it soon enough. To guess why they ran = out of food one would need to know the details of their site. Yt, DW Also today I was approached by a local farmer, Sam (unknown last = name), who had an interesting and perplexing observation. On his farm = at Blomidon, he has been finding SHREW tracks on the snow, and several = times he has followed them for about 10 metres on top of the snow, only = to find the dead carcass (prob. short-tailed shrew?) at the end of the = tracks. He says this has happened about 10 times. He knows these are = shrews, not voles or mice, but wonders what is going on here? OTHER RECENT BIRD SIGHTINGS: TOWHEE (eastern?) =97 a male, at Evangeline Beach, seen several = times over a week or more, up to about Jan. 20/16, by Barb Moore & Jim = Sacouman; PILEATED WOODPECKER =97 a female or immature seen Jan. 30/16 by me = at Saxon Street Pond; NORTHERN HARRIER =97 a female seen by me, flying Jan. 31 at the Port = Williams river bridge. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. No virus found in this message.
