> JAN. 25, 2015 - With the Sheffield Mills Eagle Watch quickly =
approaching (Jan. 30-31 & Feb. 6-7)(www.eaglens.ca), in early afternoon =
I drove out to the feeding site in the big open field at the north end =
of Middle Dyke Road. When I arrived at 1:30 p.m., there were about 25+ =
bald eagles perched in the trees and flying about and interacting and =
still feeding. One eagle had food on the ground, and several others had =
carried parts of chicken carcasses into the trees and feeding there, =
with watching ravens perched nearby. Also a few of the expected great =
black-backed gulls were also present on the ground.
>=20
> And of course there were perhaps 5-10 cars and a dozen or more =
would-be photographers on hand.
>=20
> Usually the Swetnams (poultry farmers) put out the food between 9 and =
10 a.m., and sometimes on the Eagle Watch weekends there can be multiple =
feedings.
>=20
> Remember that the feedings take place every day through the winter, =
not just on those two weekends.
>=20
> A lot of luck and endurance is involved in being there at the right =
times =97 it=92s the eagles who decide how long to wait before actively =
going after the food, and, being expert thieves, trying to steal food =
from other eagles etc.
>=20
> There are many other places, scattered around the county, where the =
eagles get fed and where they can be found perched in groups. And =
King=92s County eagles are used to gawkers, both in cars and on foot. =
Other areas to search include Avonport, the Gaspereau River Valley, =
White Rock, Lumsden Reservoir, Cornwallis River Valley (Kentville to =
Wolfville), Fred Thomas Road, Saxon Street, Canard Road, Hwy. 221, =
Canning & Kingsport & northward. Sheffield Mills is west from Canning.
>=20
> I don=92t know how many farmers now feed the eagles etc., but the =
eagles do know, and they also know who is putting out the largest dead =
chickens (daily mortalities in those big long barns). =46rom mid to =
late afternoon and overnihg, eagles roost communally, and who knows how =
much of their conversation is about where to find food?! =20
>=20
> For those who don=92t know where the Sheffield Mills Community Hall =
is, it is straight east from the feeding field. The road at the north =
end of M. Dyke Road is Bains Road =97 go to the right (east) and follow =
the bends to a stop sign. Turn right (south) there and look for the =
hall on your left after about a half-kilometre?
>=20
> On those two weekends, be prepared for a massive traffic jam at the =
feeding field. Be patient and very courteous to others present. I hope =
we will soon get some more snow and cold, both of which will help to =
concentrate the birds at the feeding sites.

> Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
