Hi Ken and all,
I am writing to clarify eBird's stance on long counts.=C2=A0 They are not a=
utomatically invalidated, nor is it a policy for reviewers to invalidate ch=
ecklists based on distance or duration.=C2=A0 Checklists of shorter duratio=
n and distance are more useful for modelling fine-scale habitat preferences=
as in the eBird STEM models (Spatio-Temporal Exploratory Models), so the l=
onger checklists are excluded for those particular analyses.=C2=A0 They are=
still included in the public output in the Explore Data tab on the eBird w=
ebsite and would be included on any data download.
The only checklists that are automatically invalidated from public output a=
re those that are entered at the provincial or state level (for instance us=
ing simply "Nova Scotia" as the location).=C2=A0 Entering checklists at the=
County level is allowed but discouraged, as the location is really too imp=
recise, and often results in coastal birds being plotted in the interior of=
the province and other similar problems.=C2=A0 Many of these are checklist=
s are invalidated if found by a reviewer due to imprecise mapping of specie=
s.
Just to be sure, I checked all invalidated records of both Cedar and Bohemi=
an Waxwings for Nova Scotia.=C2=A0 Almost all were due to province-level lo=
cations, however I did find one of your checklists from a CBC in the Truro =
area from 2010 that included Bohemian Waxwings and had been invalidated by =
Blake with the reason "location imprecise".=C2=A0 I restored this checklist=
 to valid status.

Hope this helps.

Hi Richard and allI rather suspect the eBird report you produced might be a=
bit misleading. I think more waxwings than that were reported to eBIrd but=
were disqualified from entering the general data base because they involve=
lists reported as Christmas Bird Count routes. I have always just kept a r=
unning count for each species as the day progressed on any routes I do on f=
ull day counts and most times I put in a pretty extensive day often involvi=
ng some night time observations. On CBCS the area tends to be smaller than =
a spring migration count where my route covers a good hunk of western Picto=
u Co from Pictou to the Colchester border. However, even this type of data =
does not seem to be of much good or interest to the statisticians in contro=
l of eBird. If this has changed recently or if I am wrong on this, maybe so=
meone will let me know
I personally find it annoying that this data is not counted or at least be =
included in the quarterly eBird lists the seasonal editors receive to compi=
le the NS Birds magazine. I find it great to be able to record and compare =
data from one's route from year to year when I do the same sections on the =
counts I do and for many years I do 5-7 counts. For some of the counts this=
year I tried to keep separate lists for each community but I found it easi=
er to lump everything together in getting my total for the evening tally an=
d have not yet got around to filing individual lists for each stop in the d=
ay. At least the birds on CBC will become part of the data on the Audubon d=
atabase but the spring count data does not seem to be published anywhere an=
y more that I can see so the route data I and others submitted =C2=A0has be=
en lost in that it is not counted anywhere making one wonder why do the cou=
nt at all. However it does get people out looking and sometimes different p=
eople than who do a CBC.=C2=A0
Over the winter period, I have had 2 observations of Bohemian waxwings-1 on=
the Economy CBC and 16 at access road to Big I. However I have 7 reports o=
f 328 cedar waxwings including a flock of 125 in Plymouth below my home on =
the Springville CBC. =C2=A0I checked =C2=A0every bird in this flock through=
my scope for Bohemians and there were none to be found. I would think this=
report would not be in your report Richard.
=C2=A0In past years anyone reporting this number of winter cedars would be =
asked if they checked the flock close enough as Bohemian is the most expect=
ed waxwing after November but I think for some reason this year, many cedar=
s have stayed behind. It might have something to do with the very bountiful=
supply of berries such as Hawthorne and Mountain Ash as well as apples be =
it flowering crab or Apple trees which seemed to have a lot of fruit this w=
inter. =C2=A0
Enjoy winter nature=C2=A0

Looking at Ebird data for Dec. 2015 - Feb. 2016, there are so far just 3 re=
ports of Bohemian waxwing - 15 Big Island (Pictou Co) 8 Jan., 2 East Kemptv=
ille., 9 Jan, 250 Big Island same day. For Cedar waxwing there are 20 repor=
ts, with some of up to 75 birds, from a variety of areas - mostly places wi=
th lots of birders.

JAN. 16, 2016 - Pat called me to the window at 1 p.m., to show me a large f=
lock of 75+ waxwings, which sat in our trees but just too far away for diag=
nosis for 15 minutes or so, then flew away.=C2=A0 I=E2=80=99ll bet they wer=
e Bohemians, but someone else will have to determine that.=C2=A0 Also prese=
nt were 30+ goldfinches, 15+ mourning doves, 4 rock pigeons, and 10 starlin=
gs.=C2=A0 This was in the Woodman apartment buildings at east-end Wolfville=
.
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
