I'm not sure that this recent influx of western birds (probably migrants fr=
om s.w. US in recent weeks) can be blamed on climate change. New England bi=
rders have long recognized the occasional bout of strong airflow from the s=
.w. as a source of interesting vagrants, and have long referred to it as t=
he 'Southwest Express'. This was certainly the situation at night-migrant h=
eights in late Oct. and early Nov. And we've also had several clusters of s=
uch birds in past autumns. Certainly the current event is unusual, but not =
unprecedented.

In saying all this, I am emphatically not a climate-change denier; but ther=
e may be a risk invoking a weather quirk as climate change, which the den=
iers are so fond of doing in their own misguided comments.

Cheers, Ian

Ian McLaren

Lots more disrupted bird patterns with climate change?

I took the Mountain Bluebird loop yesterday. At Cape Sable Island, The
Hawk, I found two Mountain Bluebirds and at Mavillette I found a third.
