DW ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Jim Wolford=20 To: naturens=20 Sent: Wednesday, December 02, 2015 5:55 PM Subject: [NatureNS] gulls & tractor, red-tails, b. eagles, Can. geese, = hooded merganser Begin forwarded message: From: Jim Wolford <jimwolford@eastlink.ca> Subject: gulls & tractor, red-tails, b. eagles, Can. geese, hooded = merganser Date: December 2, 2015 at 5:54:43 PM AST To: Nature BNS <nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Cc: Jim Wolford <jimwolford@eastlink.ca> DECEMBER 1, 2015 - On the northeast Grand Pre dykelands, I found a = tractor ploughing the soil of a field and it was attended by 300++ = gulls, which were a mixture of about half herring gulls, half = ring-billed gulls, and a handful of great black-backed gulls (less than = 10). Concerning raptors, on a power-pole was a probable mated pair of = adult red-tailed hawks. Also I saw a possible n. harrier, but it was = distant and soaring high above the fields. Also I saw 2 separate bald = eagles, a subadult and an immature, both sitting on the ground. DEC. 2, 2015 - Both Canard Pond and Saxon St. Pond were ice-covered, = with no water birds, but at the latter pond there were at least 17 bald = eagles perched together in the trees along the west shore of the pond = =97 this is a long-standing spot for variable numbers of bald eagles to = perch socially for long periods during the day. The ice on those two ponds did not discourage me from checking out = Silver Lake at Lakeville, where there was a mostly sleeping flock of = 150+ Canada geese (no variants nor neck-collars) and, separately, a = single male hooded merganser.
