I wasn't aware of that Meet the Coywolf episode. I will watch it soon,
thanks.

As far as I know, most or all of Nova Scotia's coyotes have some wolf genes
mixed into their genomes, hence the expression "coywolf". But their
appearances can be vastly different, varying from the typical western
coyotes to somewhat or quite wolf-like in total size and what the head
looks like.

Remember that the episode of The Nature of Things entitled, "Meet the
Coywolf" included very interesting information from several locations, like
Toronto, Chicago suburbs, Algonquin Prov. Park in Ontario, New York City,
etc.? [add Cape Breton Highlands]. And the coyotes in Chicago had no wolf
genes in them. Revisit the video and those experts.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

I snapped the pic at the link below while birding the Wolfville Rail Trail
West yesterday. Can we tell from this pic what it is exactly? I would think
it is a coywolf but is that even an official designation? I searched other
pictures of coywolf and coyotes and this one does seem to more closely match
coywolf but there is also quite a range in the look of coywolf, presumably
depending on the mix of coyote/wolf/dog. Also is German Shepherd the only
dog that can be in the mix of coywolf? Can we tell what mix this one is?

It was behaving more like coyote than dog. The pic was taken with a 400 mm
lens so it was quite far off the trail (100+ meters I believe) and didn't
come any closer. It walked parallel to the trail in the same direction I was
going for a while and it knew I was watching and it kept its distance.
