And frustrated = that the information grapevine has been pulled up, shredded and hidden = behind serial name changes to the point that only some commercial = growers might know who to ask to find what is behind this. Normally apples will drop in July if not well pollenated; perhaps = because they are competing with other apples which have a full = complement of seeds. And apples which stick on in spite of one or more = seed-free carpels will usually be smaller and flat sided. These apples were larger than is typical of Gravenstein (suggesting = heavy thinning) and well rounded, subject to internal breakdown, juicy = but with bland flavor (probably low in both sugars and acidity). So if = 10 is the rating of a quality Gravenstein these water bags were about a = 3. I can only guess how this came about but some thinners act by = preventing fertilization of weaker blossoms. Possibly, due to secondary = factors, a thinning spray overthined resulting in so few retained = blossoms that apples developed in spite of the absence of fully formed = seeds. YT, DW, Kentville=20 ----- Original Message -----=20 From: rita.paul@ns.sympatico.ca=20 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca=20 Sent: Tuesday, October 13, 2015 8:38 AM Subject: [NatureNS] An Apple Question Hi All=20 A fellow showed me apples today with no seeds or very few at least and grieved that this was caused by lack of = pollinators. Now apples with no seeds are not a bad thing so I got=20 wondering if the apple blossoms needs to be pollinated to produce apples or does the pollination only produce seeds? Not a subject that I've had a lot of experience! Enjoy the nice juicy fall apples! Paul No virus found in this message.
