At one point I = observed 8 of them in a bit of a feeding frenzy in a 100 meter area not far= offshore. Two adults and 6 immature in that frenzy. I should have tried to determine what if anything they were getting but I d= idn't. If they were getting something=2C the prey must have been fairly sma= ll or I would have noticed it. Last fall hundreds of gannet seem to be doing okay fishing fairly close off= Hartlen Point=2C Duncan's Cove=2C Sandy Cove Rd because they were actively= continuing that behavior for a couple of months but so far this year I've = only seen a few at a time around HRM Sent from my Windows Phone ________________________________ From: Alix d'Entremont<mailto:alixdentremont@hotmail.com> Sent: =E2=80=8E2015-=E2=80=8E08-=E2=80=8E12 3:25 PM To: NatureNS Post<mailto:naturens@chebucto.ns.ca> Subject: [NatureNS] Northern Gannets Near Shore Since at least August 9th there have been a number of Northern Gannets very= close to shore in the Pubnico Area. I was watching them go into Pubnico Ha= rbour=2C then make a turn and head back out towards sea. They were also pas= sing near shore from Pubnico Point all the way north until Abbotts Harbour = Wharf. Ervin Olsen saw one land in the water off of Cook's Beach near Pinkn= ey's Point recently. Frank Gummett also mentioned to me that he had four in= Halifax Harbour on August 11. A CBC article from July discusses multiple gannets found dead in the Mariti= mes. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/dead-injured-gannets-wash-up-on= -shore-in-new-brunswick-1.3174528 I can assume that the near shore sightings of gannets must be food related.= Is there more food near shore than usual=2C or is there less food offshore= ? I was scoping around where I was seeing the gannets and didn't see any ot= her species that are typically farther offshore.
