If you're going for a free-roaming cat, I wish you success! Evidently, shrews taste bad (no, I haven't confirmed that myself). I have heard that mammals which bite into them get a bad taste...I don't recall the source of this info though. Owls routinely eat them though, but unlike mammals, they don't chew, so I guess they avoid the taste. Ultimately then, I suspect you've got a cat, but a variety of mammals could spit them out if they really do taste bad.
