n style=3D"font-size: 14px;">This course is centered on =E2=80=9Cnature wri=
ting=E2=80=9D in the U.S. and Britain over the past two centuries. We will =
look at non-fiction prose by pioneers such as Gilbert White, Dorothy Wordsw=
orth, H. D. Thoreau, and John Muir, along with modern authors including Ald=
o Leopold, Rachel Carson, Annie Dillard and Leslie Marmon Silko. We will al=
so look at examples of animal presence in the works of a few fiction w=
riters and poets. Discussions will grapple with topics such as the word =E2=
=80=9Cnature=E2=80=9D itself, descriptive and narrative approaches, id=
eas about the natural world in Judeo-Christian and Aboriginal traditions, m=
ixes of the personal and the scientific, and the growth of ecological =
thinking and environmental ethics as reflected in literary works. This cour=
