Today I visited Jordan Bay Gull Rock near Lockeport=2C Shelburne Co. I was =
happy to see a healthy population of Great Cormorants and even 4 Razorbills=
(these two were recorded as present at this location during the last Breed=
ing Bird Survey). I estimated that there were 50 Great Cormorants (35 adult=
s and 15 immatures in the nests) and 300 Double-crested Cormorants. Eric Mi=
lls sent me a paper a while back entitled The Nesting of the Great Cormoran=
t (Phalcrocorax carbo) and the Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auri=
tus) in Nova Scotia in 1971 (A.R. Lock and R.K. Ross). Jordan Bay Gull Rock=
was known as Blue Gull Rock back then and the paper states that there were=
20-30 Great Cormorants and 400-430 Double-crested Cormorants. It is wonder=
ful to know that the Great Cormorant colony on this gigantic rock of an isl=
and still has numbers on par with the 1970s. See the links below for photos=
 of the cormorants and Razorbills.=20

Here is a link to Google Maps so you can see where this island is:

We also observed 2-3 cormorants bringing nesting material to the island and=
 Black Guillemots carrying fish.
