On June 30th Jake Walker found a singing male Scarlet Tanager in the Kentville Ravine and reported it on eBird. To the best of my knowledge this bird was not known to be there. Today, July 2, I went to the exact location described to me by Jake and found the adult male feeding a fledged young bird, very high in a tree. I have a decent shot, at least as documentation, here: http://rickwhitman.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-July-September-2015/i-LpHkjmp/A This location is accessed via the Picnic Grounds at the Kentville Agricultural Centre. An obvious (steep) trail goes down the hill behind the outdoor washrooms. You follow the trail upstream until you have crossed the second concrete bridge. Immediately, there is a gravelled trail going off to the right and also a rather open area ahead on the right. (The side trail is signed as "off limits" but that refers to taking it up into the "research farm". You can certainly proceed 50-100 m., which is all you want to do.) If the birds are there, you will see the male as he flies back and forth from foraging to feeding young. Note: the male never sang for me in upwards of an hour. Perhaps he's too busy now.
