But on May 30, on Herbert River next to the N.S. = Nature Trust=E2=80=99s new Devils Jaw Conservation Lands, I observed two = snappers mating. Or I assume they were in flagrante delicto. The water level in the river was quite low, and I was taking an = empty canoe down a small rapid. There were quite a few rocks above = water, and suddenly one of them started to move and then slide into the = river. I realized they were two large snapping turtles, closely attached = to each other by their legs. They tumbled in the current down the rapid, not letting go. I = noticed that one of them, presumably the male, was biting the other in = the front leg. All three of us reached the pool below the rapid, and I = managed to reach for my camera. The snappers were attached to each other = for what seemed like eternity. Then they finally separated, faced each = other for a little while, and finally swam off in different directions.=20 A photo of them, separated but facing each other, made it to the = N.S. Nature Trust=E2=80=99s Facebook page... Sorry, snapping turtles, = for the interruption. Dusan Soudek From: Keith Lowe=20 Sent: Friday, June 12, 2015 6:57 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca=20 Subject: [NatureNS] Massive Snapping Turtle at the Herbert River Trail I=E2=80=99m sure it would be a common sighting for some on this list but = I just ran across the biggest turtle I ever saw. I think it is a Common = Snapping Turtle but correct me if I=E2=80=99m wrong. =20 It was right in the middle of the trial on my way back. ATVs do go on = this trail but it was very large and I=E2=80=99m sure it would be = readily seen well in advance. I always stop to move a turtle across the = road if I see one crossing a road which has cars. I assume that is okay? = What about this instance with the snapper. Picking it up would not be an = option but should I have tried to encourage to cross the trial? I = don=E2=80=99t know that was its intention though, maybe it just wanted = to stop in the middle and bask in the sun. =20 I have a few pics here. I should have put something in one of the frames = for perspective because these pics do not convey its massive size. https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=3DF201A4640851D037&id=3Df201a4640851d037%2= 151219 =20 Keith Lowe =20 ------=_NextPart_000_0029_01D0A67B.5014E800 Content-Type: text/html; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <HTML xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40" xmlns:v =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns:o =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns:w =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" xmlns:m =3D=20 "http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2004/12/omml"><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Dus-ascii" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 15 (filtered medium)"> <STYLE><!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;} @font-face {font-family:Calibri; panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif; mso-fareast-language:EN-US;} a:link, span.MsoHyperlink {mso-style-priority:99; color:#0563C1; text-decoration:underline;} a:visited, span.MsoHyperlinkFollowed {mso-style-priority:99; color:#954F72; text-decoration:underline;} span.EmailStyle17 {mso-style-type:personal-compose; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif; color:windowtext;} .MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif; mso-fareast-language:EN-US;} @page WordSection1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt;} div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;} --></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY dir=3Dltr lang=3DEN-CA link=3D#0563c1 vLink=3D#954f72> <DIV dir=3Dltr> <DIV style=3D"FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri'; COLOR: #000000; FONT-SIZE: 12pt"> <DIV> In the past I have observed snapping = turtles=20 walking, swimming, lurking underwater, sunning themselves, eating a hot = dog,=20 digging a nest, and laying eggs.
