Huge and picking them up by anything should involve = block and tackle or a small crane, maybe a fork lift but same turtles = can move extremely fast and break the stem of a paddle with just a quick = twist of their head! Marg in White Point, Queens=20 ................................ Keith=E2=80=99s identification is correct, of course. For a turtle on a = paved road, it=E2=80=99s not easy to determine its direction of travel, = so a guess has to be made when getting it off the pavement. Roadside = gravel shoulders are popular egg-laying sites. Snapping turtles can be = picked up by the base of the tail, but try to limit the time of carrying = the turtle, and be very careful of course to watch out for its bite! = Enjoy the nesting season of June & July. =20 Cheers from Jim in Wolfville Begin forwarded message: From: GayleMacLean <duartess@EastLink.ca> Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Massive Snapping Turtle at the Herbert River = Trail Date: June 12, 2015 at 6:45:40 PM EDT To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca I would always allow/encourage it to continue on the direction it is = going. If it is this big, it is most likely a mature female, could be 30 = - 40 years old! Certainly, females are looking to lay their eggs around = this time. She knows where she is going... I have some great pics of a very large snapping turtle laying her eggs = on the gravel shore of Red Bridge Pond, here in Dartmouth, June 18th, a = couple of years ago. Lucky you!! Cheers!!
