The main focus will be on the Chimney Swift, an aerial insectivore = which annually returns north from over-wintering in the Amazon basin. = Why here? There happens to be a large night time roost in New Glasgow = at the former Temperance St. School, 334 Temperance St. First part of the evening will begin at 6:30 pm at the New Glasgow = Public Library, 182 Dalhousie St. Ally Manthorne from Bird Studies = Canada's Maritimes SwiftWatch will be on hand to give some pointers on = Chimney Swift biology, why these birds are disappearing and what we can = do to help. Ken McKenna will talk briefly on a workshop held last = summer in East Dalhousie, Kings, where swift nests were observed in a = number of barns in the area and to give some tips on what to look for in = your area to determine if swifts are nesting in old barns and like = structures in your local area. Nicole MacDonald will give a short = presentation on results thus far this spring on nesting Piping Plovers = in Northern NS. Nicole is Coastal Stewardship Biologist from Bird = Studies Canada and is working with Northern NS Piping Plovers. We also = hope to have representative(s) from the NS Bird Society.=20 After the talks and providing fine weather, we will move to the Chimney = Swift roost site at the former Temperance St. school, 334 Temperance St. = to observe the swifts gather and manoeuvre around the chimney ending = with the spectacle of them entering the chimney for the night. We have = had a night in the past week with 500+ swifts. Please note a rainy day = may modify the time the birds go in, but on a fine night this should = occur at 9 pm give or take 15-20 min before or after. Best to be there = early.
