I have always found them o= n the ground or flying low over disturbed ground. Whenever I walk on trails= through wooded area (not solely pine)=2C I look for them on the trail. Onc= e they fly it's impossible to find them. However lately I have encountered = them in open areas 50-100m from the wooded area. Since I'm usually looking = for insects on the ground=2C it easier to note them.=20 However once I found two in our gardens!! (on Ninebark as I recall). So th= at would be quite a bit later. So far I have not foun= d any for the butterfly atlas. I assume you are searching near pines? Matu= re or young? Do you have to look high on tree or on ground near the trees? = Are there wet areas nearby? The Brown and Hoary Elfins I have seen in pas= t years were close to the ground. Any tips you can share would be appreciat= ed.. I see only 1 record this way probably by Richard Mash who has done a l= ot of good work in the southern part of Antigonish and northern Guysborough= counties. But if there was a record east of here I assume they are here a= nd I am overlooking them or not going out at the right time.
