This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01D08D48.7CA53D30 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi all Note start time change!! 1) Just a reminder the Pictou Co. Naturalists is co-sponsoring a program = with the New Glasgow library featuring Andrew Hebda, curator of the = Museum of Natural History on Thurs May 14 at 6:00 pm at the community = room in the library (see notice below and note change in week day and = time). As a bonus, after a short time for break and announcements, we = will have a bonus second speaker, Cory Bishop, biology professor at STFX = , who is doing a study on amphibian breeding in the province. This is a = citizen science project which all of us can help provide info on = locations of frog and salamander eggs in ditches, ponds and forest melt = pools. (Great project for the young and young at heart). Details can be = found below. Although we have 2 presentations lined up, there should be = time to see some of the early arriving Chimney Swifts enter the old = Temperance St school roost at dusk. The poor weather has made predicting = arrival time this year a bit chancy and it might be cool enough that = night for the birds to go in early but see 2) below for a second swift = event.=20 Join Zoologist Curator from the Nova Scotia Museum, Andrew Hebda as he = talks about Sea Serpents, and demystifies the underwater creatures that = exist locally in this fun, interactive talk. Is there any truth to the = term 'Sea Monsters' or are they misunderstood? Bring the family along = and learn more! This event is co-hosted with the Pictou County = Naturalists Club (who meets regularly at the New Glasgow Library). All = are welcome! About the speaker: Andrew Hebda has been the Curator of = Zoology at the Nova Scotia Museum since 1995. He began his career with = the Department of National Defence and, while serving, Andrew completed = his B.Sc. at Carleton University and his M.Sc. at York University, both = in Biology. Andrew enjoys the range of opportunities afforded by his = museum work. On any given day, he might find himself studying any number = of fish, molluscs, insects, mammals, reptiles or amphibians.=20 The Bishop Laboratory at St. Francis-Xavier University is very pleased = to announce a new Citizen Science initiative. Their goal is to involve = everyday people in a project in which they map as much amphibian = breeding habitat in the province as possible. What does it mean to map = breeding habitat? Quite simply, they'd like to know about any ditch, = pond, or forest seasonal melt pool (called a vernal pool) in which = amphibian egg masses can be spotted and from which this geographic = information can be plotted to a map. =20 The two species of interest are the Wood Frog, Lithobates sylvatica, and = the Yellow-spotted Salamander, Ambystoma maculatum. They are interested = in these two species because their egg masses form an amazing symbiotic = association with unicellular green algae. In order to further their = understanding of this aspect of amphibian reproduction, they need to = know about a great variety of locations in which these amphibians lay = their eggs. =20 All information about this exciting new project can be found at = www.citizensciencens.ca but Professor Bishop will be with us Thurs. = night to explain the project in detail and how we can be involved 2) Mark the date June 2 in your calendar as a celebration of the = Chimney Swift. Plans are in progress for an event that night starting = with an evening presentation at the New Glasgow library (time TBA) and = if weather co-operates we will move to the parking lot of the old = Temperance St. school to view the swifts as they circle and finally = enter the chimney. This date is often near peak numbers with often = hundreds of swifts present. The event will involve Bird Studies Canada- = Swiftwatch and the NS Bird Society as well as the Pictou Co. Naturalists = Club.=20 3) The following note from member John Crabtree on a mushroom culture = workshop might be of interest to some.=20 Hi Ken, If anyone is interested they can visit the H.L.C.D.C website at = http://www.harrisonlewiscentre.org/ Regards, John. Mushroom Culture June 5, 6, 7 Mark your calendars for this year's mushroom growing workshop, with = instructors David Boyle and John Crabtree at the Harrison Lewis Centre = on Nova Scotia's beautiful South Shore. David Boyle and John Crabtree will give a general introduction to the = world of mushrooms, including discussions of their ecological roles and = uses by humans. =20 Participants will be shown the basics of growing mushrooms (shiitake, = oyster, lion's mane) and also of mushroom identification. Join us starting Friday evening to study, grow, eat them. Learn more = about their curious culture.=20 The cost for the course is $275, and includes the instructor's fee, = shared cabin accommodation for two nights, five meals (from Saturday = breakfast through Sunday lunch).=20 Please phone or email for more details or to confirm your space. Please book now, spaces are limited. Email HLC@eastlink.ca or phone = 902-541-0336. 4) I see an excellent program for the combined Nature NS, Nature NB and = the Young Naturalists of NS and NB called 2015 Festival of Nature - = Discover Chegecto June 5-6. Check it out at = http://naturenb.ca/ This event has an amazing number of presentations = and field trips on almost everything a naturalist could be interested = in. =20 cheers Ken Ken McKenna Box 218 Stellarton NS B0K 1S0 902 752-7644 ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01D08D48.7CA53D30 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 8.00.6001.23588"> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Hi all</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Note start time change!!</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial><STRONG>1) </STRONG>Just a reminder the = Pictou Co.=20 Naturalists is co-sponsoring a program with the New Glasgow library = featuring <STRONG>Andrew Hebda</STRONG>, curator of the Museum = of=20 Natural History on <STRONG>Thurs</STRONG> <STRONG>May 14</STRONG>=20 at <STRONG> 6:00</STRONG> pm at the community room in the library = (see=20 notice below and note change in week day and time).
