Hi Eric and all
Woodcock were in similar numbers than other years for me on my west Pictou m=
igration count route. I had 28 which I suspect is about the same as last few=
years for me. I had roughly equal numbers predawn and post dusk. This is a b=
ird that is easy to get if you go to the right locations and somewhat unfort=
unately in a way, Pictou Co. has lots of that habitat. I look for long roads=
ide stretches of backroad clear-cuts and drive slowly labour 45 min before d=
awn and half hour after dusk. The best period usually lasts just less than a=
n hour for each but some do seem to call and display through the night.
Weather does not seem to be a big factor and even in last night's wind, they=
were easy to hear. On one of my last stops along the River John Rd. I was s=
urprised to hear a nice crisply calling Saw-whet Owl from a cut over area- m=
y first Saw-whet for the year.
The Waterside PP Glossy Inis was seen by Peggy Scanlan in the morning and by=
Carl Canning and myself about 17:00.=20
Cheers
