Index of Subjects Bernard Forsythe maintains and monitors 15 or 20 Barred Owl nest boxes. No Barred Owls have initiated nesting yet this year with the exception of one pair in his backyard that receives supplemental food every night. And that female laid a single egg and would appear to be finished laying ! His current expectation is that nesting will be minimal this year and quite likely a new low for his boxes. This is entirely due to the deep and very late snow. If the Barred Owl adults have barely been able to keep themselves alive, they will have no physiological / hormonal signals to start nesting. Also, the females assess the foraging ability of the males every spring. If he isn't bringing her food now, she won't be producing eggs. New boxes are often not used for a few years. The owls have to find them and also select them as a good site. Nesting this year will be minimal. On the other hand, if any occurs it will be late. If there actually was a pair in condition to nest, but without a proper nest site, who knows ? They might want your box. In that somewhat unlikely scenario, you are not too late. Like a lot of projects, anytime is a good time. Rick Whitman On 4/16/15, Paul Ruggles <cpruggles@eastlink.ca> wrote: > Hi all, > Am I too late to put up a Barred Owl box for this "spring"? > Paul. >
