The planted witch-hazels = there flower in spring, and at least two cultivars are now in bloom with = yellow or orange flowers. >=20 > I also checked the Eye Road bald eagle nest (just east of Wolfville)at = about 4 p.m. There were no eagles in sight, but, while I sat in my car, = an adult bald eagle flew over my head from the north, flew directly to = the nest, and landed on its rim. After inspecting the nest briefly, the = eagle went into the nest, then stood on the opposite rim, then flew less = than 2 metres to land on a branch adjacent to the nest, and stayed there = for a while. Something has happened at this nest, so that apparently no = youngsters are going to be produced there. I hope I=92m wrong, but, as = far as I know, eagles hardly ever try to renest.=20 >=20 > APRIL 14, 2015 - I checked on the buds of three kinds of trees in = Wolfville near the Acadia Arena. Only the planted silver maples looked = like their swollen buds have opened a bit =97 not so yet for red maple = nor American elm. I drove a bit south to two more planted silver maples = on Grandview Drive just below Skyway Drive. There I could see that both = the male and the female had open flower buds. Checking on these things = has been tricky, but now the snow is quickly disappearing, and very soon = we should be seeing snowdrops, crocuses, etc. >=20 > Also, back by the Acadia Arena, a feeder had several goldfinches, many = of which were showing bits or lots of yellow =97 one male has nearly = completely gotten into breeding dress. >=20 > Cheers from Jim, and HAPPY SPRING!! --Apple-Mail=_106C0A7A-5D42-4AA1-948E-F642566E86F8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=windows-1252

<meta http-equiv=3D"Content-Type" content=3D"text/html = charset=3Dwindows-1252">
<body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; = -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: = after-white-space;">Subject: nature notes: witch-hazels, eagle = nest-check, silver maple flowers, goldfinches & = yellow

<blockquote type=3D"cite"><div style=3D"margin-top: = 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px;"><span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 1.0);">Date: = <span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">April 14, 2015 at = 6:02:00 PM ADT

<div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px;"><span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 1.0);">To: = <span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">Nature BNS <<a = href=3D"mailto:nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca">nature@blomidonnaturalists.c= a>

<div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: = 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px;"><span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 1.0);">Cc: = <span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">"Jim Wolford ." = <<a = href=3D"mailto:jimwolford@eastlink.ca">jimwolford@eastlink.ca>, = Mark Elderkin <<a = href=3D"mailto:elderkmf@gov.ns.ca">elderkmf@gov.ns.ca>, Pam Mills = <millspl@gov.ns.ca>, = Kimberley Huskins <<a = href=3D"mailto:HUSKINKD@gov.ns.ca">HUSKINKD@gov.ns.ca>
</= div>

<meta http-equiv=3D"Content-Type" content=3D"text/html = charset=3Dwindows-1252"><div style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; = -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;"><div = style=3D"margin: 0px;">APRIL 13, 2015 - On Sunday Doug Linzey was = reminding some of us that up on the North Mountain his yard has a = mixed-up grafted witch-hazel plant that blooms both in the autumn = and in the spring.
<div style=3D"margin: 0px; min-height: = 14px;">

<div style=3D"margin: 0px;">That prompted me to look in = Wolfville=92s Clock Park (across Main St. from the Baptist Church = at Highland Ave.).
