> APRIL 13, 2015 - On Sunday Doug Linzey was reminding some of us that =
up on the North Mountain his yard has a mixed-up grafted witch-hazel =
plant that blooms both in the autumn and in the spring.
>=20
> That prompted me to look in Wolfville=92s Clock Park (across Main St. =
from the Baptist Church at Highland Ave.). The planted witch-hazels =
there flower in spring, and at least two cultivars are now in bloom with =
yellow or orange flowers.

> I also checked the Eye Road bald eagle nest (just east of Wolfville)at =
about 4 p.m. There were no eagles in sight, but, while I sat in my car, =
an adult bald eagle flew over my head from the north, flew directly to =
the nest, and landed on its rim. After inspecting the nest briefly, the =
eagle went into the nest, then stood on the opposite rim, then flew less =
than 2 metres to land on a branch adjacent to the nest, and stayed there =
for a while. Something has happened at this nest, so that apparently no =
youngsters are going to be produced there. I hope I=92m wrong, but, as =
far as I know, eagles hardly ever try to renest.=20

> APRIL 14, 2015 - I checked on the buds of three kinds of trees in =
Wolfville near the Acadia Arena. Only the planted silver maples looked =
like their swollen buds have opened a bit =97 not so yet for red maple =
nor American elm. I drove a bit south to two more planted silver maples =
on Grandview Drive just below Skyway Drive. There I could see that both =
the male and the female had open flower buds. Checking on these things =
has been tricky, but now the snow is quickly disappearing, and very soon =
we should be seeing snowdrops, crocuses, etc.
>=20
> Also, back by the Acadia Arena, a feeder had several goldfinches, many =
of which were showing bits or lots of yellow =97 one male has nearly =
completely gotten into breeding dress.

> Cheers from Jim, and HAPPY SPRING!!
