Happy Spring!!

I walked on Huntington Point Beach this morning. I was surprised to
see seventeen Gannets wheeling with the wind from the west, none
seemed to be feeding. A while later they returned from the east. This
time they were well out in the Bay, flying in a tight line low to the
water. I don't often see gannets this far up the Bay. Someone once
told me that they don't like to fly over land unless they can see
water close by. They must have flown up to Scots Bay and then returned.

On eBird there are few sightings recorded yet this year in Nova
Scotia, Baccaro and Cape Sable have some larger numbers, but the large
movements must not have taken place as yet.

Little else was seen, some herring gulls, and three loons in
juvenile/winter plumage.

On the Canard Dyke there is a large gathering of geese, and ducks.
Last week I saw 14 pintails, today 4 widgeon among a large number of
mallard and black ducks and thousands of Canada geese. I wasn't able
to identify any unusual goose species.

On Fred Thomas Rd, among the large flock of gulls I was able to spot
two adult Lesser Black Backed gulls.

Cheers, George Forsyth
