In answer to a couple of queries, we stay at a small development on North
Hutchinson Island between Fort Pierce and Vero Beach. North Hutchinson
Island is a barrier Island between the Indian River Lagoon and the sea. Where
we are the lagoon is about a mile wide with a mean depth of about 4ft except
for the Intracoastal Waterway which is a fairly narrow channel of 12 ft.
There are lots of islands, mostly "spoil islands" left by dredging, which are
basically small tropical Islands designated for various uses such as
camping, Kayaking, bird sanctuary, etc. The lagoon is home to about 350
dolphins which do not go to sea, also manatees and lots of otters who are adept at
stealing shrimp from bait buckets. Adjacent to us is a huge wildlife area
which is home to lots of bobcats, raccoons and marsh rabbits. Because the
manatees and the dolphins are so tame there are now restrictions on human
interaction. If you put a fresh water hose over the dock a manatee will come
and suck the water for 10 or 15 minutes while you can scratch it's back.
They have now however banned that practice, The dolphins are also tame and
are individually named by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute across
the lagoon from us. Given a chance they will take every fish discarded when
fishing and will stay at a boat to be hand fed. That has also been banned.
We have a wide variety of waterfowl of all types but not much in the way of
small birds probably because of the elaborate mosquito control practices.
