I have been primary buying JustUs coffee for the last 6 years now but
Songbird SOS and the discussion here prompted to look into Bird Friendly
coffee. I wish our local JustUs carried Certified Bird Friendly coffee but
they don't as of yet so I decided look into others sources. Birds & Beans
seems like the best choice for Canadians who want Certified Bird Friendly
coffee but shipping is prohibitive, especially when considering you can only
buy a bag at a time due to freshness.

So I wrote Birds & Beans explaining our ongoing discussion and our dilemma
about not having any local source for Certified Bird Friendly coffee and
suggested Earth Organic would be a logical choice to carry their product.
David Pritchard from Birds & Beans said he would contact Earth Organic about
carrying their product and suggested it might help of potential buyers for
their BF coffee would also write Earth Organic. So if anyone else would buy
Certified BF coffee from Birds & Bean at Earth it would be good to drop them
a line: http://www.organicearthmarket.com/

Also Bird & Beans asked Robert Rice of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology
Institute to write me about Bird Friendly coffee and he gave me permission
to share his email below.

Dear Keith,

Madeleine Pengelley asked that I contact you about the Bird Friendly coffees
for which you have expressed interest. First of all, thank you for that.

We created the BF criteria based on fieldwork conducted by our staff
scientists here at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. The work was done
in Mexico, Guatemala and Peru over the course of several years, and included
thousands of data point observations. We feel they are the best set of
criteria for any coffee making the claim of being beneficial to birds or
other wildlife.

There are a number of coffees with the term "shade-grown" or "shade coffee"
on the packaging, but consumers rarely knows what that means in terms of
viable habitat. Those are terms that get used for marketing purposes often,
and generally have no inspection or certification (third-party or otherwise)
associated with them.

All BF coffee is certified organic as a pre-requisite and inspected for the
shade characteristics to determine whether or not the shade management meets
the strict BF standards. It is, in the words of some of the specialty coffee
industry folks here in the US, the "gold standard" for shade. We like that,
obviously. Moreover, any coffee bag with the BF seal contains 100% certified
product - not a requirement for some other certifications, which allow as
little as 30% to be certified and still carry a seal of some kind. We feel
that product purity is an important aspect of any certified coffee,
especially any that claims some sort of environmental or habitat benefit.

Madeleine's company (Birds and Beans) is one the few in Canada carrying BF
coffee and they do a great job of roasting some high-quality coffees.
Kicking Horse has expressed interest in carrying some BF coffee, but has not
joined our program to date.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. And thank you
again for your interest in Bird Friendly coffee.

Regards,

Robert
