Three unusual things have happened here in Portuguese Cove to highlight the stress our wildlife is under this winter. White-tailed Deer have been jumping onto our back deck to lap bird seed. In fifteen winters here the deer have always tongued seed through the screens protecting the platform feeders but they have never come up onto the deck. Ring-necked Pheasants, three males and six females, have also been coming up onto our back deck for the first time and working the floor of the deck and the railings where I scatter seed. The Mourning Doves have been coming in groups of 30+ individuals and for the first time ever I saw a Mourning Dove stand its ground against a Red Squirrel. To top it off there was a dead vole outside our bedroom door yesterday afternoon. It may have been dispatched by our two cats or simply died of hunger. We have a tight house so I have no idea how it got in. It looks like the end of this dreadful winter is coming this week. Please let it be so! -- Hans Toom http://www.hanstoom.com http://www.hanstoom.com/blog
