Well that was an interesting episode, Marg. =C2=A0Says something about maki=
ng sure the birds have tangles to navigate! =C2=A0I'm going to be planting =
a lot more vine plants this summer.

I once saw a junco in the froze position. I kept an eye on it and it was th=
ere so long I thought it was literally frozen, as the weather was very cold=
. =C2=A0It was there for half an hour. =C2=A0I went outside to see what I c=
ould make of it, then I spied a shrike in a nearby tree. =C2=A0The junco th=
en took off and the shrike behind it and I then ran after the them. =C2=A0T=
he junco headed into the woods and I don't know what happened then. I was s=
o sorry that I went outside. =C2=A0Though there have been other cases of a =
bird in need, such as frozen onto something (the feet must have been wet) w=
here it was the thing to do. =C2=A0In general though, best to assume as you=
 did, and see what happens. =C2=A0If it was there for an hour I think I'd h=
ave to investigate somehow though. =C2=A0A cautionary tale!

 I was just privileged to watch the most amazing bit of nature, live, in my=
=20
own grapevine. Over the years there have been many interesting things appea=
r=20
and take place outside my kitchen window. Todays incident has ranked with=
=20
the very best.
I was filling the kettle, just looked out to see who was feeding when I=20
noticed a solitary chickadee frozen holding to an upright bit of vine. Very=
=20
still. I looked about as we have been visited from time to time a small=20
Sharpie who works very industriously but so far (thankfully or not I cannot=
=20
decide; it has to eat too) ) hasn't caught anything. I didn't see anything=
=20
but thought I would go pick up the camera, remembering the lovely photos I=
=20
got last Sat.. Just as I came back to the window, the hawk blew into the=20
vine. It knew there was something there for sure but just didn't pick the=
=20
chickadee out. There was a lot of twitching and peering maybe 10 minutes=20
worth. Suddenly in flew another chickadee and it began to taunt the hawk an=
d=20
chattering and peeping it seemed to encourage the other to do the same. The=
y=20
moved through a real tangle and
and right up behind the hawk, then in front, dropping back into the heavy=
=20
tangle. Hawk was really taking notice of all this and began trying to grab=
=20
one or the other. Chickadee #2 flew straight out out of sight with the hawk=
=20
after it. No. 1 Chickadee was back to being frozen.=C2=A0 I went to the win=
dow on=20
the other side of the house and could see nothing so returned to the kitche=
n=20
and there were two bird frozen and the hawk booting it across the front yar=
d=20
after? nothing I could see.
Fascinating.
