Hi Everyone

1) It might be cool outside, but come on out to the annual show and tell =
night of the Pictou Co. Naturalist's Club tomorrow night, Feb. 24, at =
6:30 at the New Glasgow Library community room and enjoy the short =
presentations of six or so local naturalists as they highlight some of =
their most interesting nature observations from the past year or so.The =
topics will be wide-ranging from butterflies, birds, flowers, seals, =
owls, and waterfalls to name a few. Many will be a reminder of warmer =
months and if past years are an indication, will be very informative!. =
Come on out and support the presentations and bring along a friend as =
everyone is welcome as always.=20

2) Only a week away will be our March 3 presentation. Local naturalist =
and artist Mark Brennan from White Hill will give a presentation titled =
"Seeking the Great Silence-Exploring the Old Growth Forests of Vancouver =
Island Through Art and Sound".=20

Mark has been expanding his art work into recording sounds in nature and =
in May 2014, he made a trip to Vancouver Island where he captured both =
sights and sounds of old growth forests and he will share this work with =
us and demonstrate how this not only a way to preserve these intact =
wildernesses in art but also how it has deepened the sense of wild in =
him and hopefully to us the audience. He will also be speaking on the =
Garry Oak forest - an amazing ecosystem. Mark always puts on a great =
presentation as his passion for nature pours out so mark this in your =
calendar as one not to miss.=20

Note the correction of the date from my last notice. This presentation =
is March 3 -not May 3.=20

3) Our "April" presentation will be actually be held March 31 and the =
topic will be Hypopagea - the Realm of Winter-active Insects=20

St. Francis Xavier Student Lucas Daut will be joined by teacher Randy =
Lauff as they present findings on research into insects active in =
winter.=20

Ask anyone - 'What happens to insects in winter?' and you'll likely get =
one of two answers: 'They die.' or 'They go dormant.' In reality, we do =
find snowfleas, winter stoneflies and snow scorpionflies active on =
milder days in winter. However, those insects reflect a mere pittance of =
the activity which some beetles and bugs (among others) show. Where are =
all these winter-active insects? In hypopagea, of course!" =20
Everyone welcome to come out and find out about this intriguing topic =
with a strange new name!
