There were laws about when to pick the bayberries for candle and soap =
making. There had to be a hard white frost before you could. Liverpool =
area had such a law at some point many years ago, I believe. The =
bayberry candles were for soothing coughs (asthmatics) and the soap =
irritations of the skin. I recently gave away an old herbal (copy) that =
explained a lot of this. I have made both candles and soap and indeed it =
takes a huge amount of berries to get even a wee bit of the wax. Mixed =
with bees wax was my recipe. Very valuable they are, those wee berries.  =

Bayberry=E2=80=94not barberry=E2=80=94has such a wonderful scent.  You =
can boil the berries in water until the wax melts and comes to the =
surface.  Then, when cooled, you can skim it off and mix it with regular =
candle wax, for wonderful, scented candles.  Lots of work though.
