In England they are very common. The easiest way to see them is simply to
drive along the motorways. They hover over the verges alongside the
highway. Apparently the vibration from heavy trucks causes small mammals to
come to the surface in the grass beside the highway, and there they become
easy prey. Also, if you can get it on Netflix or elsewhere, there was a
good movie released in the UK in the 1970s called Kes, about a boy who
rescued one and it became a pet. The movie was more about the boy and his
coming of age than the kestrel.
