Hi Keith and all:
=20
I entered X for species seen within my ebird areas for about 20 years prior=
to my starting with E-bird. This was collected from my logbooks of specie=
s I had seen over the years. I was told that it would be viewed and record=
ed in my records but would not be seen by the public or anyone else and tha=
t it was best to put at least one in for the species=2C but this was years =
later after I had taken the time and effort to enter the data in. I origin=
ally was told that an X for a species if the numbers were unknown was the w=
ay to do it. This was wrong. When I have spare time in my old age I'll ha=
ve to go back and update all of this data previously entered with numbers s=
o it has scientific value. It is good that you have questioned this in th=
e early stages of your ebird access. All the best=2C

I just rain across this short article on eBird explaining why your best est=
imate is always better than entering an X for the number of birds. I assume=
d that was the case but I did have some doubt and wondered if I should be =
giving it my best guess if I wasn=92t sure. http://help.ebird.org/customer/=
