In Middleton this morning we were lucky to see the female Western Tanager at the window feeder on the last house on the south side of Ross Lane. The bird was well seen and has been seen by birders for a bit now, the owner of the property said it visited yesterday as well. The dark grey back and wings, with two wing bars, yellow head and under body were striking in the bright sunshine on such a cold day. Harold and I had a great steak out in the car in the back south west corner of the hospital parking lot, it cost us three dollars but was worth it to wait in the car out of the wind for the tanager to arrive. We were not able to see the Yellow Throated Warbler that has been visiting on Victoria St in the same town. In Bridgetown as we were driving through I noticed a Turkey Vulture coasting above the town, I pointed it out to Harold who was watching a vulture in a different direction. We turned off on a street in the direction that the vultures seemed to be descending towards. We arrived at the town's ball field in time to see both birds land in a weeping willow at the northwest corner of the field, left field! There were already ten vultures in the tree. We saw a dozen Turkey Vultures all roosted in the same weeping willow, -9 C, all looked quite dejected! In Annapolis Royal the Marsh was all frozen but for a very small channel in the center, the sewer ponds hosted some black ducks, one Scaup sp., and about forty Buffelhead ducks. we walked around the French Basin just in case! We were certainly cold in the wind but happy to find two very brightly marked Orange Crowned Warblers associating with some Purple Finches. The warblers were bright yellow below, grey headed, slight eye ringed, smudgy eye lined, and without wing bars. Along the Fundy shore from Parkers Cove to Port George we saw very few birds because of the heavy surf and low tide. A Sharp Shinned hawk flew out from under the wharf at Parkers Cove, surely sitting in the lee of the wind and in the bright sun! A few Surf Scoters, Common Eiders, and an unidentified Alcid were all that we could muster. Happy New Year to All, George Forsyth
