Since that time it h= as spread as far away as eastern Ontario resulting in widespread ash tree m= ortality. While I don't believe the Emerald Ash Borer has yet reached Nova = Scotia, other invasive insect species certainly have. A recent article published in the Journal Forest Ecology and Management sug= gests that native bark-foraging predators such as woodpeckers and nuthatche= s responding to the new food source the Emerald Ash Borer represents may pr= ovide some population control on the invasive insect. They further suggest that management for these foragers (e.g. maintaining s= nags as nesting sites) may enhance the foraging species' populations and he= nce increase their ability to control the pest insects. The authors incorporated 'citizen science' as part of their methodology. A popular account of the article can be read here: http://news.uic.edu/emerald-ash-borer-may-have-met-its-match An abstract of the article can be read here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378112713007858 All the best, Lance From: Songsparrow@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Songsparrow@yahoogroups.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2014 7:52 AM To: Songsparrow@yahoogroups.com; Songsparrow@yahoogroups.com Subject: EXTERNAL: Re: RE : Songsparrow: Black-backed Woodpecker Enlightening deduction, Marcel.
